The following is the text from a presentation by the President of Austral, Inc., Erik Ortega, given February 19, 1998 to Public Service Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as part of the Oklahoma Minority Supplier Development Council.

We are a small Solutions Computer firm. Do not let the word SMALL word confuse you.. We are BIG in our Technical, Business, and Management Knowledge and Skills.

We know where resources and information are and how to tap into them. IF necessary we can partner with resources as big as Microsoft or as small as our neighbor that has his computer repair shop in his Van.

As you well know, it is not the size of the tool that counts; it is: Was the solution appropriate? Was the solution well implemented?

My associate is a woman, a CPA and a native Tulsan.

I am a Civil Engineer with a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and subsequently have become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.

  1. I have been working with computers since 1970
  2. Initially I developed some applications based on finite element analysis to design tunnels and simulate the propagation of waves in a tailrace tunnel for the discharge of a hydroelectric power plant.
  3. Also, I have the experience of international business; in Colombia (where I am from) and in Mexico, building the very specialized siding for a nuclear power plant.
  4. In addition to general computers, I have 12 years of experience specifically in Personal Computers.
  5. Austral’s Services and Products:
    1. We are a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider.
    2. We have a MCSE Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer on staff
    3. SBT Accounting Systems provides accounting software for different platforms SQL with Power Builder for thousands of users, The Professional Series with Visual Fox Pro for hundreds of users, and the Vision Point 2000 Windows and DOS Fox Pro-based accounting software for tens of users.
    4. TIW manufacturing software which links seamlessly to SBT
    5. Bar Code data capture for Manufacturing Control and Payroll
    6. Hourglass software and hardware for Bar Code Solutions Implementation
    7. Citrix Thin-client architecture.
    8. Some hardware – we are resellers for Hewlett Packard and Compaq. We are glad to sell almost at cost for the opportunity to complement our software and consulting services.

Usually, when we receive a problem from a client, it is a live one where the priorities, solution and implementation have to be accomplished very strategically in order not to disrupt the current processes. The benefits of the solution need to be felt as soon as possible, and all this without losing perspective of how the parts will fit together in the final solution.

The best way to say what we do is to give a real example, withholding the names, dates, and amounts to protect the privacy of my clients.

The client calls and says:

We have the following problem:

  1. We have hundreds of time cards that have to be processed weekly.
  2. From those time cards we have to determine Payroll and Billing.
  3. We have a program that we must use for the billing
  4. In the way it is now we enter the information 4 times:
    1. Payroll
    2. Billing
    3. Sales Report
    4. Human resources management and analysis
  5. The worst is that each one of those pieces of information does not talk to any other piece.
  6. Also there are several business rules that affect the validity of the data and the ability to use it.
  7. Those rules cannot be applied now.
  8. We have to be able to pass Auditing internal or external easily.
  9. Eventually we would like to only input the data one time and have the Scheduling, Billing, Payroll, and Accounts Receivable Control all communicate and update.

Solution:

But this is not the end of it. Now we are beginning to design their network, create an intranet web site to post all their personnel handbooks, meeting notes, etc. and establish a complete e-mail system, both internal and external via the internet.

This is one tailored solution for one customer. We are very confident in our resourcefulness and the amplitude of our knowledge that we are able to provide proper solutions for any situation presented to us.

Since it is possible that some could not understand everything I said due my accent and due to the short time allowed for this presentation, I will post the complete text on the Web this afternoon.

Thank you for your time and your attention.
